In our recent newsletter I mentioned an event at the Allen County Fairgrounds on Sept 21 and Sept 22nd. This is with the Rebel Run cars show 2018 at the fairgrounds in Lima Ohio. We have been offered the opportunity to put on our vintage exhibition style racing on both days. We have made the decision to accept the offer from the promoter Max McClure and run at that event. We have canceled the “static display only “event at Eldora Speedway on theses dates. The feeling of the members that I have talked to about this event have been in favor of this change. Our mission is to keep the history of oval track racing from the past alive by our “Traveling Museum of Vintage Race Cars “. We take a great deal of pride in maintaining our vintage cars in a restored condition that we can actually run them at a lively pace on the track for the enjoyment of the fans. This change in schedule gives us the opportunity where we can do just that. We have a long history at Eldora as one of the tracks to run on. We however have been unable to get on the track there now for several years and we feel that putting on our exhibition racing is the paramount to our mission. Static car shows are nice, but it is not much more than looking a picture of a vintage race car. Seeing the cars in action at speed is a much better experience for the fans. Just walking around restored antiques might be interesting but seeing the cars in action is truly inspiring. This is justified by the comments that we get when we put our cars on display before the on-track show. Many fans are amazed and delighted that we will actually put the cars on the track. The older fans talk about their memories of the good old days when the have seen these types cars in action. The younger fans get a chance to see cars that raced before they were born. They can see the evolution of the safety that a modern racing car enjoy. Open cockpit cars from the past, Modified stock cars, Open wheeled caged cars from Midget to Champ cars, all have contributed to this process. We have the technical and historical knowledge of these cars and our members are happy to share this with the fans. The VARC Mission is to show off our historical collection of vintage cars and there is no better way than our on-track exhibition style of racing. With all this in mind we have decided that this change in the schedule is in the best interest of VARC’s fans and members. I need to get a list of members that are planning on making this show. We will have the track to ourselves on both days, so we can plan on running several races. If we get enough cars we can break up our heat races by car types. Midgets non-caged, caged. Open wheel sprint. Modified coupes. Stock cars. We are inviting any members of the other vintage racing groups to join us in what looks to be a great event. Drop me a note if you are interested. Thanks Jim McDermott
